Major League Eating’s 2009 Burrito Eating Championship — always popular among gurgitators — will be held today at the New Mexico State Fair. The winner takes home three-thousand dollars … then spends the remainder of the weekend in the bathroom.
In 2006 the legendary Joey Chestnut won a similar contest at the Fair by eating 34.5 grilled green chile cheese sandwiches in 10 minutes. But the world record for burrito eating was set in September 2007 by Timothy Janus, who wolfed down 11.81 pounds of burritos in just 10 minutes. Today’s contestants aim to break the 12 pound barrier, using burritos provided by Garcia’s Kitchen in Albuquerque.
Other International Federation of Competitive Eating world records are itemized here.
My favorites are: 7.75 pounds of Turducken in 12 minutes (Sonya Thomas); six pounds of SPAM from the can in 12 minutes (Richard LeFevre), 20 pounds of rice balls in ten minutes (Takeru Kobayashi); 84 ounces of baked beans in 58 seconds (Micah Collins); 4 pounds, 14 1/4 ounces of fruitcake in ten minutes (Sonya Thomas); 57 (17.7 pounds) cow brains in 15 minutes (Takeru Kobayashi).
