2006: Steve “Crocodile Hunter” Irwin, 44, is killed by a stingray while filming a segment for a series called Ocean’s Deadliest when he swims too close to one of the animals, which have poisonous barbs on their tails.

1957: The Ford Motor Company begins selling the Edsel. The car receives a surprisingly large amount of negative publicity and is discontinued three years later due to slow sales.

1886: After a 30-year battle to protect his tribe’s homeland, Apache chief Geronimo surrenders to General Nelson Miles and government troops, making him the last Indian warrior to formally give in to U.S. forces.
