2002: Three former executives from Tyco International, including CEO Dennis Kozlowski and CFO Mark Swartz, are indicted in New York on charges that they stole hundreds of millions of dollars from the company. Kozlowski and Swartz are later convicted and given lengthy prison sentences.

1977: Political activist, Stephen Biko, founder of South Africa’s Black Consciousness Movement and a leader in the fight against apartheid, dies in a Pretoria prison hospital of head wounds received while being held by police. His death sparks international outrage and makes him a martyr for South African black nationalism.
