2006: Jake J. Brahm, 20, a grocery clerk from Wauwatusa, Wisconsin, surrenders to federal authorities and is charged with perpetrating an Internet hoax threatening a “dirty bomb” plot against seven NFL stadiums.

1995: After years of failing to pay its dues and other expenses, the United States is notified by the United Nations that it is the organization’s largest delinquent debtor—to the tune of $1.25 billion.

1944: Two liquid natural gas tanks explode at the East Ohio Gas Company in Cleveland, Ohio, killing 130 people. The explosion destroys two factories, 79 homes and more than 200 vehicles.
