This Day in Failure: October 2

2006: Charles Roberts, 32, a father of three, enters the West Nickel Mines Amish School in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, and fatally shoots five female students and wounds five others before committing suicide.

1970: Thirty-one people are killed when one of two chartered planes carrying members of the Wichita State football team crashes en route to a game at Utah State. The plane carrying the team’s reserves follows the original flight plan through Wyoming, but the one carrying the starters takes a sightseeing tour, flying low through a closed-in canyon, crashing when the pilots fail to pull up in time to clear approaching peaks. The team finishes the season 0-9, and Wichita State’s football program is disbanded in 1986.
