2001: Rowdy soccer fans riot during a soccer match between the Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko of Kumasi at Accra Stadium in Ghana. One-hundred-twenty-six people are killed in a stampede that occurs when the crowd attempts to flee the tear-gas filled stadium and encounters locked exterior gates, causing fans to be crushed to death by other people also trying to leave.

1980: The Liberian freighter Summit Venture slams into the Sunshine Skyway in Tampa, Florida, causing a 1,200-foot section of the bridge to collapse. Thirty-five people—most of them in a Greyhound bus—plunge 150 feet to their deaths.
