2003: The Old Man of the Mountain—a series of overhanging granite cliff ledges in New Hampshire's Franconia Notch State Park which formed the profile of an old man's face—collapses to the ground.

1999: Mark Manes, 22, is arrested for supplying a gun to Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, two teenagers who killed thirteen people at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, two weeks earlier.

1986: In NASA’s first post-Challenger launch, an unmanned Delta rocket loses power in its main engine shortly after liftoff, forcing officials to destroy it via remote control.

1962: A freight train goes through a red signal, jumps the tracks and collides with a commuter train three miles north of Tokyo, Japan. Minutes later a second commuter train on the same line plows into the back of the first commuter train, causing an explosion and derailment that kills more than 160 people.
