2000: A 1995 Honda Civic belonging to New York Knicks head coach Jeff Van Gundy is demolished by the team plane at Westchester County (New York) airport. While taxiing to the gate, the pilot revs an engine to turn and the jet blast sends the car spinning off the tops of vehicles belonging to other Knicks personnel.

2000: A riverside pier with a crowded open-air nightclub collapses in Philadelphia, plunging dozens of partygoers into the Delaware River, killing three people.

1980: Triggered by a 5.1-magnitude earthquake, volcano Mount St. Helens erupts in Washington state, killing 57 people and causing billions of dollars in damage.
