1997: IBM’s Deep Blue chess computer defeats world-champion Garry Kasparov in a six-game match.

1996: A ValuJet DC-9 en route from Miami to Atlanta catches fire shortly after takeoff and crashes in the Florida Everglades, killing 110 people.

1953: The Henry Steinbrenner, a 427-foot ore carrier hauling 8,800 tons of iron ore, sinks to the bottom of Lake Superior after taking on high seas that flood its cargo hold. Seventeen of the 31 men on board are lost.
