2009: St. Mary’s men’s basketball team starts a college basketball game behind 1-0 after incurring a technical foul when one of its players dunks during warmups, a violation of NCAA rules. The Gaels go on to lose to Gonzaga 83-58.

2002: Three people are killed and two are critically injured when scaffolding falls from the 43rd floor of the John Hancock building in Chicago, Illinois. Unusually high winds are considered to be the cause of the accident.

1982: Guitarist Randy Rhoads is killed in a small plane accident when the pilot crashes the plane into a house while attempting to “buzz” Ozzy Osbourne’s tour bus.
