1979: A nuclear accident at a power plant at Three Mile Island (near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania) renews concerns about the safety of nuclear power.

1975: The Washington Capitals defeat the California Golden Seals 5-3, the lone road victory for the expansion Caps during their inaugural season. By losing 39 of 40 away games the Caps set NHL records for most road losses in a season and most consecutive road losses (37). Defenseman Bill Mikkelson also sets the NHL's single-season record for worst plus-minus rating that season, posting a rating of -82 over the course of 59 games.
