This Day in Failure: March 21

1970: ABC’s Wide World of Sports first illustrates “the agony of defeat” in its opening credits, showing Yugoslavian Vinko Bogataj careening off a ski jump during the International Ski Flying Championship in Oberstdorf, West Germany.

1943: Rudolph-Christoph Freiherr von Gersdorff, a professional soldier and arch-critic of Adolf Hitler, carries a bomb (with a ten-minute fuse) to a “Heroes’ Memorial Day” ceremony that the German dictator plans to attend. Gersdorff presses the bomb’s detonator charge as he greets Hitler at the beginning of the Fuhrer’s scheduled tour of captured Soviet war-booty. But Hitler proceeds to race through the exhibition, scarcely looking at the assembled materials, and departs the building in less than two minutes, forcing Gersdorff to abandon his suicide attack and defuse the bomb in the nearest bathroom.
