This Day in Failure: June 16

1987: A New York jury acquits Bernhard Goetz of attempted murder in the subway shooting of four African-Americans. He is convicted of illegal possession of a weapon.

1983: Journeyman boxer Luis Resto upsets undefeated Billy Collins, Jr., 21, in a non-title fight at New York’s Madison Square Garden. After the fight, it's discovered that much of the padding had been removed from Resto's gloves, allowing him to inflict frightening damage to Collins' face, including a tear to the iris of his right eye. Resto and trainer Panama Lewis serve 30 months in jail for assault, conspiracy, criminal possession of a deadly weapon, and tampering of a sports contest. Collins never fights again and dies in a car accident less than a year after the bout.
