This Day in Failure: July 24

2009: A Russian-made Aryan Airlines passenger plane (Flight 1625) skids off an airport runway in Mashhad, Iran, killing 19 people and injuring at least 17 others.

1978: Billy Martin is fired as manager of the New York Yankees—the first of three times he is fired from that position.

1921: The Aerowagon—an experimental high-speed railcar powered by an aircraft engine—makes a successful first test run from Moscow to Tula, only to derail during the return trip. Everyone on board is killed, including the Aerowagon’s 25-year-old inventor Valerian Abakovsky.
