1996: Jamaican authorities fire upon the seaplane of music star Jimmy Buffet after mistaking it for a drug trafficker’s aircraft. Buffet, well-known for promoting a partying lifestyle, is unhurt in the incident.

1988: Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder is fired as a CBS Sports commentator after making disparaging comments about African-Americans.

1920: Prohibition, which prohibits the sale, manufacture and transportation of alcoholic beverages, goes into effect.
