2007: Jennifer Strange, a 28-year-old mother of three, wins the second-place prize (tickets to a Justin Timberlake concert) in a water-drinking contest sponsored by radio station KDND 107.9 “The End” (Sacramento, California). Hours later she dies of water intoxication.
1991: U.S. skier Eric Keck becomes the first skier to clear the catch fence at the Mausfalle (mouse trap) jump at the top of the Hahnenkamm (HKR) Downhill course in Kitzbühel, Austria. Soon after the crash, a bleeding Keck emerges from the forest wielding a mangled ski. Minutes later, fellow American Bill Hudson also sails off course, clearing the fence and landing amongst boulders. Hudson’s injuries keep him in the hospital for two weeks and have him seeing double for three months.
1984: An international panel overseeing the restoration of the pyramids in Egypt decides to stop using modern cement to repair the ancient structures. An investigation reveals that the cement’s water content is responsible for new cracks and splits in the original stone blocks.
1915: The House of Representatives rejects a proposal that would give women the right to vote.
