2013: The California Institute of Technology’s baseball team defeats Pacifica 9-7, ending a 228-game, decade-long losing streak. Meanwhile, the program’s 25-year, 463-game Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) losing skid remains intact. Caltech's men's basketball team snapped a 310-game SCIAC losing streak in 2011 with a one-point victory over Occidental College. And the Caltech Beavers’ volleyball team ended a 56-match winless drought in 2012.

1971: Major General Idi Amin declares himself military head of state in Uganda after dictator Milton Obote’s regime is overthrown. During his eight years of rule, Amin manages to plunge Uganda into economic chaos and several ill-fated military conflicts.

1950: U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy announces he has evidence that various individuals in the State Department are card-carrying members of the Communist party.
