This Day in Failure: December 15

2008: The 22-year-old Arena Football League (AFL) cancels its 2009 season, hoping to re-work its business model and re-launch the league at a later date. “Every owner is committed to coming back in 2010,” says Jim Renacci, co-owner of the Columbus Destroyers and vice chairman of the AFL executive committee.

1967: Forty-six people are killed when the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, collapses during rush hour, causing dozens of cars to plunge into the icy waters of the Ohio River. The cause of the collapse is attributed to a structural fracture. In the wake of the disaster the federal government sets up new bridge inspection guidelines.
