This Day in Failure: August 4

2008: British Celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson apologizes for mistakenly suggesting that henbane—a potentially fatal poisonous plant—is “great in salads” and “really yummy.” Thompson made the recommendation in the August 2008 issue of Healthy and Organic Living magazine, which responded by sending subscribers an urgent warning saying that henbane “is a very toxic plant and should never be eaten,” as it can cause hallucinations, loss of consciousness, seizures, and, in extreme cases, death. It’s a close relative of deadly nightshade and sometimes referred to as stinking nightshade, owing to its pungent odor. The celebrity chef had confused henbane with the fat hen weed, which has edible leaves that can be added to salads or cooked like spinach.
