1988: A Delta Boeing 727 crashes during takeoff at Dallas-Fort Worth International airport, killing 14 people. The accident is attributed to the crew’s failure to set the wing flaps in the proper position.

1886: A 7.6 magnitude (estimated) earthquake strikes near Charleston, South Carolina, killing more than 100 people and destroying hundreds of buildings.
