This Day in Failure: April 30

1993: Monica Seles is stabbed in the back by a deranged fan during a tennis match in Hamburg, Germany.

1871: A combined force of Anglo Americans, Mexican Americans, and Tohono O’odham Indians descend upon an Apache camp and kill 144 inhabitants, mostly sleeping women and children, making this one of the most brutal massacres of American Indians in 19th century history. In December of 1871, 100 men are collectively put on trial for the crime—commonly known as the Camp Grant Massacre, for the military installation near where it took place—yet a jury of a dozen Mexican Americans and Anglos from Tucson return a verdict of not guilty.
