2009: David Kellermann, 41, acting chief financial officer of mortgage finance giant Freddie Mac, is found dead of an apparent hanging at his home in Vienna, Virginia. Among the company’s troubles at the time of Kellermann’s death? Investigations by federal prosecutors in New York and Virginia, as well as an investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

1991: A magnitude 7.4 earthquake strikes Costa Rica, killing 80 people and leaving more than 30,000 people along the Costa Rica-Panama border cut off from food, water and medical supplies.
