2019: The Columbus Blue Jackets defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning 7-3, the culmination of a 4-0 series sweep in the first round of the NHL playoffs. It's the first time in NHL history that the President's Trophy winning team is swept in the first round. The Lightning finished the 2018-19 regular season with 128 points, the fourth-highest regular season point total ever.

2009: With $27.3 billion in debts, General Growth Properties of Chicago declares Chapter 11 bankruptcy, making this the largest real estate bankruptcy filing in U.S. history.

1992: The House ethics committee names 303 U.S. lawmakers who had overdrawn their House bank accounts.

1947: The French ship Grandcamp, with a cargo of ammonium nitrate fertilizer, catches fire and explodes at Texas City, Texas, killing 576 people.
