Man upset over speeding ticket harasses state trooper’s mom

Lawrence Demaio

Lawrence Demaio of Carle Place, Long Island, has been arrested for allegedly harassing the mother of a New York state trooper.

Demaio, 54, is accused of calling the mother of Victor Cardus, who works out of the Valley Stream (New York) barracks, and advising her that her son was in a terrible car wreck.

Police traced the number to Demaio’s cell phone; records also indicate that Demaio tried calling the Trooper’s mother at her old number immediately before reaching her.

When Demaio got her on the line he allegedly asked if she was “related to a New York State trooper named Cardus.” When she answered in the affirmative, police said Demaio told her Cardus had been in a serious accident and had been taken to the hospital.

Apparently, Demaio was still upset with Trooper Cardus for issuing him a speeding ticket on the Northern State Parkway (85 mph in a 55 mph zone) a month earlier.

Demaio has been charged with second-degree aggravated harassment.
