SuperFerry 9, a 7,268-ton ferry carrying upwards of 1,000 passengers capsized Sunday in the southern Philippines, leaving nine people dead and 33 missing.

Approximately 926 passengers were saved in rescue operations conducted by commercial vessels, a Navy gunboat, and a fishing boat after the ship rolled over onto its side.

Maritime accidents are common in the Philippine archipelago because of weak enforcement of safety regulations and lax maintenance of ships.

On December 20, 1987, the ferry Dona Paz sank after colliding with a fuel tanker in the Philippines, killing more than 4,300 people in the world’s worst peacetime tragedy at sea.
